After an aborted launch attempt on December 12, Gemini VI launched on this day (December 15) in 1965, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Gemini VI was originally supposed to launch in October 1965 to rendezvous with an Agena Target Vehicle, but when the Agena failed to make it to orbit NASA replanted the mission to rendezvous with another target - Gemini VII.
Gemini VII was not planned as a rendezvous mission, but an endurance mission - to test the capabilities of the Gemini craft and crew to live and work in space for up to 2 weeks. As a result of the change the Gemini VI/VII rendezvous was the first to happen with two spacecraft with humans on board.
Gemini VI had a relatively short mission of just 22 hours. After the successful completion of the rendezvous and their mission the crew returned to Earth - leaving Gemini VII to complete a mission that lasted 14 days.
